Peru | Reflejo | Stopping the Music

Jessica had a choice. She could brush off what her son might be hearing from God because it felt uncomfortable and out of place. Or she could take a risk and lean into what God might be inviting them to do.

Jessica is an everyday disciple-maker empowered by Novo’s Global Partner, Reflejo, who has seen God use simple acts of obedience to spark gospel movements (read more about that here).

She was at a friend’s birthday party with her son, Ayrton, when he suddenly looked at her and said, “Hey, what are you doing?”

“What do you mean?”

“You should start a Bible study right now.”

Jessica was confused. “We’re in the middle of a birthday party,” she reminded him. “There’s music playing. People are talking and eating.” Clearly, this wasn’t the place for a Bible study.

“No, God’s telling me you need to do a Bible study right now.”

Jessica had a choice. She could brush off what her son might be hearing from God because it felt uncomfortable and out of place. Or she could take a risk and lean into what God might be inviting them to do.

Jessica chose to take the risk.

She interrupted the party, stopped the music, and asked everyone to sit down in groups of three. She had them pull out their phones and open the Bible. “We’re going to study a Bible story right now.”

People looked very confused, but they listened. They did a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) right there in the middle of the birthday party.

By the end of the DBS, five people had decided to follow Jesus!

One of the five was the birthday girl’s father-in-law—who she had been praying for for over a year to receive Christ! God knew what the birthday girl would most want to receive for her birthday, and gave it to her, right in the middle of her party!

Sometimes saying yes to Jesus looks like stopping the music at a birthday party.
