San Juan Capistrano, California | A Prayer-Walking Movement in Orange County’s Largest School District
After attending the Activating Prayer Cohort (formerly the Spiritual Authority Cohort), one of the things Jonné felt God leading her to do was prayer-walk at her kids’ schools and bless the schools during drop-off and pick-up, which she did for years. But at the start of the last school year when she went to do her annual prayer-walk, she sensed God saying, “Why only do this before the school year starts? Why not every month? And why are you doing this by yourself? Dream bigger.” “OK God, I’ll invite some other moms,” Jonne responded. “Bigger,” God said. “Why couldn’t every school in your district be prayer-walked?” This felt crazy to Jonné because her school district was one of the largest in California. But God was big enough.
Jonné began inviting some other moms to join her, and to prayer-walk their own schools. Soon she had a leadership team and they went from 7 to 13 to 22 schools... and now they are at 32 schools!
Exponential growth has been evident in this prayer-walking ministry. For example, one mom faithfully spent a year prayer-walking her son’s school—alone. The next year a new leader emerged at that school, who recruited a couple new moms to join her in prayer. When the first prayer-walking mom showed up to anoint and “pass the torch” to this new team, she was surprised to see 20 people ready to pray!
Another woman who committed to prayer-walking last year was feeling super discouraged by December, when each month maybe one other mom would show up to pray with her. She wanted to give up, but she stayed obedient to what she thought God was calling her to do, and kept praying. The next month they found out the Satanic temple was starting a Satan’s club on her elementary school campus. The community was in an uproar. That month, 40 people showed up for the prayer-walk: parents, neighbors, teachers, even the assistant principal. The next month (the day before the Satan club met for the first time) 100 people came, believers and non-believers, and even the mayor! When the Satan club met, the only people present were the parent sponsoring the club and that parent’s two kids. Nobody else came, and the club has not attempted to re-launch this school year! Jonné had no idea what was coming when God told her to dream bigger. But HE knew.
